Now with a student population of over 17,000, UCC boasts itself as one of the leading research facilities in the country, receiving the largest research income in the state. Notable alumni include Irish rugby coach Declan Kidney, Irish out-half Ronan O’Gara, GAA players Seamus Moynihan and Maurice Fitzgerald, novelist Seán O Faoláin, comedian Des Bishop and journalist, Brendan O’Connor. Campus Situated on the banks of the River Lee, the campus is split into two main areas. The architecture is a mix of old and new with the iconic Quadrangle building standing opposite the new glass-fronted Student centre, separated by the President’s Garden. On a sunny day you’ll find hundreds of students hanging out here on what used to be the College President’s private grounds. A short distance away is the Brookfield medical and health science centre that is attached to the 880-bed University College Cork teaching hospital. Flooding in 2009 caused significant damage to buildings in UCC, most notably the Gateway building which has just been reopened. Off the main campus, there are buildings that accommodate psychology and music courses, which are not far away. The newly opened Lewis Clucksman gallery, which is open to the public, provides visual arts, and has been said to be the cultural heart of UCC. Parking on campus tends to be limited as most students either live in Cork or in nearby Student Accommodation. Public transport into town is accommodated well by three different bus numbers that run every 15 minutes. On campus there is a plethora of places to eat including a large student cafeteria, Apache Pizza, cafes and sandwich shops. There are two bars on campus, creatively named the New bar and the Old bar.
