UCD was established in 1854 and is located 5km South of Dublin’s city centre. The main Belfield campus is huge and is home to around 25,000 students, including 5,000 international students. Famous alumni include the novelists Maeve Binchy, Roddy Doyle and most famously James Joyce, from the world of film; Gabriel Byrne, Brendan Gleeson, Neil Jordan and Jim Sheridan as well as the captain of Ireland’s rugby team Brian O’Driscoll.
Campus
Everything you need is on campus and nobody really leaves to go elsewhere unless going home. Architecturally speaking UCD isn’t the most pleasing on the eye with the arts block being a particular eyesore. However, there are plenty of other nice, modern new buildings dotted around campus.
In general, the buildings are fairly spaced out and each has its own coffee shop or restaurant, so students tend to stay in and around their own block during the day. This limits how much students from different subjects get to mingle but this obstacle can be easily countered by frequenting the Student Centre or having a few cheeky ones in the Student Bar or even by scounting for talent in the library - which is a very popular pick up spot during the exam period by the way!
Dining
There are a bunch of coffee shops and bars on campus for those feeling peckish and the main restaurant provides hot food at very good deals. The Student Bar also has hot food at cheap prices, and has pool tables and darts for those who skip lectures or like to pretend/hope that they are cancelled. Many students drive elsewhere for lunch just to mix it up as the choice of food on offer can get a bit monotonous and boring after a while but they do so at the risk of losing their parking space.
Parking
For those who drive, there are several car parks on campus but they fill up quickly in the mornings, and certain areas are pay and display. Also there is some serious clamping in action around college so those who park a little too cheekily around campus are at serious risk.
