Originally set up in 1970, IT Sligo has grown to have a student body of over 5800. IT Sligo, like many of the other ITs, prides itself on the level of practical experience students get in their course. Nearly all courses give students the chance to get hands on in practicals, work placements and lab work. The IT has 3 schools; Business and Humanities, Engineering, and Science. Located centrally in Sligo, the IT is comprised of mostly modern architecture, with only the wing of the former Regional Tech College remaining. The most recent developments have been the new student centre and the library, which has three distinct floors that allow people with different objectives to work in their best environment.
The bottom floor is quite sociable with couches and can be good for group work. The middle floor is where the majority of books are located and people can browse freely, while the top floor has strict silence rules for the serious studier or last minute crammer. On campus there are over 950 parking spaces available, with a mix of pay and display parking close to the college and free parking slightly further away. A 20-minute walk from the Sligo town centre, there is a shuttle bus that runs to and from the college every 20 minutes. Also located on campus is the Business Innovation centre, a hub for start-up businesses.
