The University of Limerick is situated 5km outside of Limerick city-centre. The college has 11,500 students, and with 1,000 of these international students, it is a truly multi-cultural campus. Famous alumni include Pat Cox, former president of the European Parliament, Jean Butler, choreographer and dancer of Riverdance fame, former Irish Rugby coach Eddie O’Sullivan and the GAA commentator and former Kerry football player Pat Spillane.
The beautiful River Shannon flows right through the campus, with buildings located on either side of its banks. As a result of being founded in the 1970’s, much of the architecture on campus is relatively drab, but recent developments on the far side of campus are modern and attractive. The campus is large, with the buildings spread out well among plenty green areas.
Library Facilities
The Glucksman library is modern with good facilities and friendly staff. However it, like most college libraries, gets crowded around exam time. The opening hours are good, there are automated facilities for taking out books quickly and there are a reasonable amount of computers.
Dining
Food on campus is surprisingly good. There is a Subway and Starbucks in the main building as well as the college canteen. Most buildings also have their own independently run cafés. A quirky addition to campus life is the farmers market that takes place on Tuesdays. Locals bring organic fruit, veg, and home-baked goods to sell at student prices.
Parking
There are approximately 2,500 parking spaces. Parking is difficult and can be found for free or at a cost of €3 per day. It is often necessary to be on campus at 8:30am on weekday mornings to get free parking and there is very little parking after 8:50.
